Can Adults Memorize the Quran?
They say “old is gold”, but sometimes it feels like certain tasks are better completed at a younger age. Like memorizing the Quran. Children who are able to dedicate their childhood years to the monumental task of memorizing the Quran are lucky, but does this mean that adults cannot?
Sometimes, we grow up and realize we want to memorize the Quran. We want to reap the benefits that come with knowing more Quran: more concentration/devotion in prayer, a better understanding of our Deen, and, of course, the reward. Sometimes, regret settles in over our “lost chance”.
The truth is, all is not lost! Can adults memorize the Quran? The answer is a resounding yes!
As an adult, you can memorize the Quran, with Allah’s help, because of the following reasons:
The Barakah of The Quran is In Your Favor
Allah has taken the responsibility of the Quran upon Himself:
إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَه
“It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it.”
And further, He SWT has also told us that the Quran has been made easy for remembrance:
(وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكر).
This is what we have to remember: Allah has made it easy. Not just for kids. Not just for people with open schedules. For everyone. Once we understand that we have the power of Allah on our side, we can make the all-important intention to begin!
Adults Can Commit
As adults, we often have the autonomy and independence to commit ourselves to a certain task. Children, more often than not, depend on adults to guide and create schedules for them. It may seem like your daily schedule is so busy that you have no control over it. But remember, your commitment does not have to be for a huge chunk of your day. Even if you commit to just a few minutes every day, it is a positive step in the direction of achieving your goal.
Set Your Own Mindset
This holds true for everyone, children and adults alike. With the right mindset, you can successfully move towards achieving your goal.
But what is the right mindset? Think of your intended task in positive terms. Instead of viewing it as a daily chore, look forward to it as your daily respite from other things.
Many Have Done It Before
One of the biggest proofs that it is possible to do Hifz as an adult is the fact that countless people have done it before! The biggest example is of our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW who was 40 years old when the Revelation began. Beyond that, many of the Sahaba RA memorized the Quran as adults.
There are countless modern-day examples, too, such as a 55-year old professor in Houston, or the 82-year old grandmother who memorized the Quran alongside her daughter, or the 78-year-old man who began his Hifz journey at the age of 62.
Lest we forget our own Safa Mazhari, a 24-year old teacher who actually completed her Hifz at Quba Academy! If they can do it, so can you!
Not only is it possible, the memorization of the Quran will leave you with lasting benefits, Insha Allah, in this Dunya, and the Hereafter.
