Seven Ways to Easily and Quickly Memorize the Quran, With The Help of Allah.

Memorizing the Quran is a monumental task that comes with immense reward. But that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult!

Read on for some tried and tested tips to help you on your journey.

1. Make the Intention.

Never start without a clear intention. Do you want to become a better Muslim by memorizing the Quran? Do you want to get yourself and your parents into Jannah? Do you want to make Allah happy with you? Whatever your goal may be, remember that Allah rewards us according to our intentions.

Write down your intention and put it in a place where you will see it frequently throughout the day. This can serve as an excellent motivational tool.

2. Create a schedule – and stick to it!

For all things, and especially Hifz, it is extremely important to create and maintain a daily schedule. Decide on a time (twice daily) when you will sit and memorize Quran. The first session should be to memorize a new lesson, and the second session should be to perfect it.

Research shows that we forget a large portion of what we learn within 24 hours. Use your second session to prevent all that hard work from going to waste! Many Huffaz suggest having an early morning session, and another one in the afternoon or evening.

3. Revise Previously Learned Material.

This sort of ties in with the previous point. To keep what you have memorized in your long-term memory, keep revising! It helps if you have a system to keep yourself on track, using something like the Sabaq (new lessons), Sabqi (recent lessons), Manzil (old lessons) method.

4. Have Someone to Read to.

You will need a Hifz buddy! Always have someone listen to you after you have memorized your lesson. Do this even if you think you are doing great on your own.

Your Hifz buddy could be a family member, a friend, or a teacher. Anyone you can trust to catch your mistakes will make a good Hifz buddy.

5. Divide and conquer–but don’t forget to merge.

A common mistake made by people memorizing the Quran is to try to get too much done in a very short amount of time. We asked Sister Bushra Awan, Head of the Tahfeez Department at Quba Academy for advice in this regard.

She suggests the reader break down their selection for the day into parts. Then, memorize each part before moving on to the next one.

For example, memorize two lines rather than seven, and perfect those two lines; then, move on to the next two lines (within that same session). Finally, merge all the lines together and revise.

6. Energize Yourself!

It won’t be possible to achieve any goal with little to no energy. Eat healthy meals, drink plenty of water, and get an adequate amount of sleep.

A Mediterranean style diet is often recommended by researchers for a healthy body and mind. Interestingly, such a diet often incorporates foods recommended by the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW, such as olives, dates, and figs.

7. Don’t Overdo It.

Understand that some days might not go the way you expected them to. Go easy on yourself those days.

Let’s say you study 45 minutes every morning after Fajr, and you have started to memorize ten lines daily. But, one day, you cannot get past three lines, no matter how hard you try! My advice: keep trying for your full 45 minutes, but if you cannot achieve that day’s goal, don’t stress out.

Tomorrow will, Insha Allah, be a better day.

And NEVER forget to make Dua!

No matter what we do and how hard we try, nothing can be achieved unless Allah SWT wills it into existence. Make tons of Dua and always begin your session with the following words:

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِى صَدْرِى وَيَسِّرْ لِى أَمْرِى وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِى يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِى

Recite this dua three times, five times, seven times, or to your heart’s content!

Remember that Allah SWT says in the Quran:

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكر

And, indeed, We have made the Quran easy to remember.

Allah will make it easy, if He wills!
